Heating
The house is (mostly) equipped with underfloor heating. You can control the temperature yourself using the thermostat. Keep in mind that underfloor heating takes time to warm up, so please don’t set it too high — it will eventually reach the selected temperature.
Wood stove

🔥 Nothing beats a cozy evening by the fireplace! Here’s what you should know:

  • The fireplace is suitable only for firewood or an ecological fire log.
  • Do not use the fireplace when there is no wind, as smoke may blow back into the house.
  • Please note that the fireplace gets very hot.
  • In wintertime, one ecological fire log is provided for your first fire. It’s easy to light using the paper wrapping and will burn for around three hours.
  • The stacked wood (in some houses) is primarily decorative and intended for “emergency use.” If you do use it, thank you in advance for replenishing it.

🪵 Buying Wood

  • Ecological fire logs are available at our reception (EilandVerhuur, Torenstraat 18, Nes).
  • Firewood is available at Welkoop (Fabrieksweg 4, Hollum), and sometimes at local supermarkets.
  • We strongly advise against using cheap paraffin blocks, as they do not burn cleanly.

🧹 Cleaning the Fireplace

We kindly ask you to leave the fireplace clean:

✅ Put cooled ashes in a waste bag
✅ Tie the bag closed
✅ Dispose of it in the residual waste container
❌ Never use a regular vacuum cleaner!

How does ventilation work?

The holiday home is ventilated via a mechanical ventilation system. In the bathrooms (or other rooms), you can increase ventilation if it becomes humid or warm inside.
If you hear the system running continuously, you may lower the setting if needed.
Please note: the system cannot be switched off.

  1. Lowest setting (normal)
  2. Middle setting
  3. High setting (good for humidity)
  4. Timer switch:
  • Press once = 10 minutes
  • Press twice = 20 minutes
  • Press three times = 30 minutes

Are you missing a light bulb or a battery?

In the house, you’ll find a blue supply box (located either in the utility cupboard or under the sink). Inside you’ll find items such as light bulbs, batteries, and a vacuum cleaner bag.

If needed, you are welcome to use these. We kindly ask you to note it on the form in the box and to leave the form on the dining table upon departure.

Breakage or damage
Accidents can happen easily, even during a holiday. We would be grateful if you inform us in case of breakage or damage, so we can repair it as soon as possible.
In case of serious damage or loss, we kindly ask you to cover the cost of replacement or repair.

Smoke-free home

This is a non-smoking property. Of course, smokers are welcome to smoke outside.

⚠️ Please be aware of the fire hazard! Cigarettes must be disposed of in an ashtray or bin. If we find cigarette waste around the house and need to clean it up, we will deduct the costs from the deposit.

Doors

To open or close the garden doors, first lift the door handle upwards, then return it to the normal position — after that, you can turn the knob or key.

It can get quite windy on an island, and Villa Kwikstaart is no exception. Therefore, it's important to close the doors behind you.
If you'd like to keep the doors fully open, please use the wooden clogs to prevent them from slamming shut.
At the front door, there is a hook that allows you to secure the door in place.

  The Sauna

Inside the cabin, your body temperature rises to approx. 39 °C, prompting the body to sweat. This can have many benefits, such as improved blood circulation, better breathing, faster metabolism, lower blood pressure, improved resistance to infections, muscle relaxation and pain relief.
A sauna session also deeply cleanses your skin. For dry skin, the structure can improve through water absorption and sweat gland activation.

✅ The Sauna Ritual

Showering

  • Take a warm shower before entering the sauna — even if you’ve already showered earlier in the day. This warms up your body and promotes better sweating.

Drying Off

  • Dry yourself thoroughly after showering, so your skin starts sweating more quickly.

Sauna Cabin

  • Temperature typically ranges between 50–60 °C.
  • Always sit or lie on a towel.
  • The higher you sit, the hotter it gets.
  • If desired, you may pour water over the stones or coals to increase humidity
  • (not applicable to infrared saunas).
  • A session lasts on average 8–15 minutes.
  • Before exiting, sit on the lower bench for a moment to stabilise circulation.
  • Sit or lie in a relaxed position; gentle movement or massage helps promote sweating and relaxation.

Cooling Down

  • Take your time to cool down.
  • Start with deep breaths of fresh air.
  • Then cool your entire body — including your head — with a cold shower, bath, or (if available) fresh air outdoors.

Resting

  • After cooling down, allow your body to rest for at least 15 minutes.
  • Sit or lie down and, for example, read a book.

Hydration

  • Drink a non-alcoholic beverage during your rest period to replenish fluids. Water is always a good choice.

Repeating

If desired, you can repeat these steps one or more times for a full sauna experience.

Enjoy and relax!

Swimming pool subscription

The subscription for the outdoor swimming pool, which you can use during the summer months, is on the dining table.

Barbecue and open fire

Due to the thatched roof, open fire is strictly prohibited. This also includes charcoal barbecues. If an electric or gas barbecue is available, you are welcome to use it.

🧼 Please don’t forget to leave the barbecue clean when you leave. Thank you!

Am I allowed to walk in the dunes around the house?

🌾 The dunes with marram grass are fragile and may not be entered. Once damaged, they sadly do not recover.

🍃 Thank you for taking care of nature!

Tick Alert

Unfortunately, ticks are also found on Ameland. This parasite can be dangerous because it can transmit various diseases through a bite. From April to October, ticks are very common. Therefore, always check yourself carefully after being in the dunes, forest, or garden. If a tick has bitten you, use a tick remover (tick tool) to take it out.

How to prevent a tick bite?

A tick cannot fly or jump. It drops down from bushes or tall grass. In principle, it can suck blood anywhere on the body, but it prefers to settle in skin folds, such as the hairline, armpits, buttock crease, groin, or behind the knees.

You can help prevent tick bites as follows:

  • In areas where ticks are common, always wear long trousers (tuck the trouser legs into your socks) and a shirt with long sleeves.
  • Wear light-coloured clothing so that you can easily spot a tick.
  • Apply an insect repellent containing DEET or lemon eucalyptus extract to uncovered skin for optimal protection against tick bites.

Check, check, double check!

Been on an adventure? Enjoyed nature? Check yourself and/or each other thoroughly for tick bites! Even if you have protected your skin in advance, it is still necessary to check your body. A tick bite is hardly noticeable, and that’s the danger: you can be bitten without realising it. So always check!
If you find a tick, remove it as quickly as possible. The longer it stays attached to your skin, the greater the chance that it will transmit pathogens.

If you do get a tick bite

Do NOT do this!

Attention! Always remove a tick the right way: with a proper tick remover. Do not use alcohol or other substances to stun the tick. Do not try to remove it with your nails, tweezers, or even a cigarette. Doing so can put the tick into shock. Bad for the tick, but worse for you! When in shock, the tick regurgitates the contents of its stomach, including harmful bacteria and viruses, which can then enter your body. Exactly what you want to avoid!
Never throw a live tick back into nature – crush it carefully so it cannot infect anyone else.

Do this!

Found a tick? Use a good tick remover and grasp the tick by the head, as close to the skin as possible. Remove it with a steady, twisting and pulling motion. Then disinfect the bite with alcohol.
Did part of the tick (mouthparts or head) stay behind in your skin? Don’t panic – just remove it as you would a splinter. In that case, you twisted or pulled too hard or not enough. Removing ticks is a delicate task.
Always write down the date and location of the tick bite in your diary/calendar and note where on your body the bite occurred. If an infection develops, this information will help you get the right treatment quickly.

⚠️ If a red spot or ring appears around the bite within a few weeks, or if you feel unwell, this may indicate an infection with the Borrelia bacterium. Contact your doctor immediately and provide as much information as possible. The sooner treatment begins, the greater the chance of success!
