The living room has underfloor heating, which is set by default to 20°C during the day and 18°C at night. If desired, this can be adjusted manually via the thermostat located near the television. However, it will automatically reset to the default settings each evening.
The entire house is equipped with smart meters that maintain a constant temperature. The thermostat is programmed so that the bedrooms stay at 20°C during the day and 18°C at night. This setting cannot be adjusted manually.
The house is heated by underfloor heating. The gas fireplace is mainly for decorative purposes. You can operate it using the remote control:
- To ignite the flames, press buttons 1 and 3 at the same time. After a few seconds, you’ll hear a beep. Once the pilot flame is lit, the fireplace will start at maximum flame height.
- To lower the flames, press button 2.
- To increase the flames, press button 1.
- To turn off the flames, hold down button 2 or press button 3.

⚠️ Please note: This is a decorative fireplace (not very energy-efficient) and not intended to heat the house. Please be mindful of gas consumption. When in use, it also counteracts the underfloor heating. If you still wish to use it, please do so with care — and preferably for no longer than one hour.
In the house, you’ll find a blue supply box (located either in the utility cupboard or under the sink). Inside you’ll find items such as light bulbs, batteries, and a vacuum cleaner bag.
If needed, you are welcome to use these. We kindly ask you to note it on the form in the box and to leave the form on the dining table upon departure.
In case of serious damage or loss, we kindly ask you to cover the cost of replacement or repair.

📱 Tip: Check out our AmelandApp (under the button "Discover Ameland").
Here you’ll find detailed information about off-leash areas, fun walking tips, and everything you need to know about visiting with your dog.
This is a non-smoking property. Of course, smokers are welcome to smoke outside.
⚠️ Please be aware of the fire hazard! Cigarettes must be disposed of in an ashtray or bin. If we find cigarette waste around the house and need to clean it up, we will deduct the costs from the deposit.
The door to the swimming pool has a sliding lock at the top. Always keep it closed if you have children who cannot swim! Also make sure the door does not stay open (e.g. with something blocking it), as this can cause the entire house to become warm and very humid. After using the pool, close the cover again by pressing the “close” button.
Every Tuesday between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, a technician from installation company R. Oud will stop by to check the quality of the pool water. You won’t be disturbed by this. They enter through the basement door and only need access to the pool system in the technical room — not the pool area itself. This is for your information only; you do not need to stay at home. They have their own key.

⏻ Instructions for Use
The heating unit has two rotary knobs. The upper knob is the timer and the lower knob is the thermostat.
Switching On
Turn the timer knob clockwise to the “on” section (section A in figure 2, 0–4 hours). The heater will start heating until the timer returns to 0 and the indicator lights come on.
Presetting the Time
To preset the heating time, turn the timer knob clockwise to the preset section (section B in figure 2, 0–8 hours). The heater will switch on once the preset time has elapsed and the timer has moved to the “on” section. The heater will remain on for approximately four hours. The indicator lights will also remain lit during the preset time.
Example: You want to bathe immediately after a 3-hour walk. Turn the timer knob to the preset section at position 2. The timer is activated and after two hours the heater will turn on. As it takes about one hour to heat the sauna room, the sauna will be ready for use after three hours.
Switching Off
The heater switches off automatically when the timer reaches zero. You can turn the heater off at any time by rotating the timer knob counter-clockwise. The indicator lights will also turn off.
Switch off the heater once you have finished bathing. It may sometimes be advisable to leave the heater on for a short time to ensure that the wooden structures are properly dried.
Always make sure that the heater is switched off and has stopped heating after the set time has elapsed. The timer and thermostat lights will not be lit when no power is supplied to the heater.
Setting the Temperature
The thermostat maintains the desired temperature in the sauna. To find the most suitable temperature, you can adjust the thermostat setting.
Start by setting the thermostat to the maximum position. If the temperature becomes uncomfortably high, turn the thermostat knob slightly counter-clockwise.
⚠️ Note: A small adjustment at the high end of the scale can result in a significant change in air temperature.
The Sauna
Inside the cabin, your body temperature rises to approx. 39 °C, prompting the body to sweat. This can have many benefits, such as improved blood circulation, better breathing, faster metabolism, lower blood pressure, improved resistance to infections, muscle relaxation and pain relief.
A sauna session also deeply cleanses your skin. For dry skin, the structure can improve through water absorption and sweat gland activation.
✅ The Sauna Ritual
Showering
- Take a warm shower before entering the sauna — even if you’ve already showered earlier in the day. This warms up your body and promotes better sweating.
Drying Off
- Dry yourself thoroughly after showering, so your skin starts sweating more quickly.
Sauna Cabin
- Temperature typically ranges between 50–60 °C.
- Always sit or lie on a towel.
- The higher you sit, the hotter it gets.
- If desired, you may pour water over the stones or coals to increase humidity
- (not applicable to infrared saunas).
- A session lasts on average 8–15 minutes.
- Before exiting, sit on the lower bench for a moment to stabilise circulation.
- Sit or lie in a relaxed position; gentle movement or massage helps promote sweating and relaxation.
Cooling Down
- Take your time to cool down.
- Start with deep breaths of fresh air.
- Then cool your entire body — including your head — with a cold shower, bath, or (if available) fresh air outdoors.
Resting
- After cooling down, allow your body to rest for at least 15 minutes.
- Sit or lie down and, for example, read a book.
Hydration
- Drink a non-alcoholic beverage during your rest period to replenish fluids. Water is always a good choice.
Repeating
If desired, you can repeat these steps one or more times for a full sauna experience.
Enjoy and relax!
Ameland aims to be an energy-neutral island. We would like to do our part by using energy responsibly — especially considering the presence of a heated swimming pool.
We kindly ask you to help by not leaving windows open unnecessarily (all rooms are equipped with ventilation grilles), switching off the lights when leaving, and closing the pool cover after use.
If there are any issues with the electricity, the fuse box for this house is located in the hallway near the front door.
Due to the thatched roof, open fire is strictly prohibited. This also includes charcoal barbecues. If an electric or gas barbecue is available, you are welcome to use it.
🧼 Please don’t forget to leave the barbecue clean when you leave. Thank you!
🌾 The dunes with marram grass are fragile and may not be entered. Once damaged, they sadly do not recover.
🍃 Thank you for taking care of nature!
Unfortunately, ticks are also found on Ameland. This parasite can be dangerous because it can transmit various diseases through a bite. From April to October, ticks are very common. Therefore, always check yourself carefully after being in the dunes, forest, or garden. If a tick has bitten you, use a tick remover (tick tool) to take it out.
How to prevent a tick bite?
A tick cannot fly or jump. It drops down from bushes or tall grass. In principle, it can suck blood anywhere on the body, but it prefers to settle in skin folds, such as the hairline, armpits, buttock crease, groin, or behind the knees.
You can help prevent tick bites as follows:
- In areas where ticks are common, always wear long trousers (tuck the trouser legs into your socks) and a shirt with long sleeves.
- Wear light-coloured clothing so that you can easily spot a tick.
- Apply an insect repellent containing DEET or lemon eucalyptus extract to uncovered skin for optimal protection against tick bites.
Check, check, double check!
Been on an adventure? Enjoyed nature? Check yourself and/or each other thoroughly for tick bites! Even if you have protected your skin in advance, it is still necessary to check your body. A tick bite is hardly noticeable, and that’s the danger: you can be bitten without realising it. So always check!
If you find a tick, remove it as quickly as possible. The longer it stays attached to your skin, the greater the chance that it will transmit pathogens.
If you do get a tick bite
Do NOT do this!
Attention! Always remove a tick the right way: with a proper tick remover. Do not use alcohol or other substances to stun the tick. Do not try to remove it with your nails, tweezers, or even a cigarette. Doing so can put the tick into shock. Bad for the tick, but worse for you! When in shock, the tick regurgitates the contents of its stomach, including harmful bacteria and viruses, which can then enter your body. Exactly what you want to avoid!
Never throw a live tick back into nature – crush it carefully so it cannot infect anyone else.
Do this!
Found a tick? Use a good tick remover and grasp the tick by the head, as close to the skin as possible. Remove it with a steady, twisting and pulling motion. Then disinfect the bite with alcohol.
Did part of the tick (mouthparts or head) stay behind in your skin? Don’t panic – just remove it as you would a splinter. In that case, you twisted or pulled too hard or not enough. Removing ticks is a delicate task.
Always write down the date and location of the tick bite in your diary/calendar and note where on your body the bite occurred. If an infection develops, this information will help you get the right treatment quickly.
⚠️ If a red spot or ring appears around the bite within a few weeks, or if you feel unwell, this may indicate an infection with the Borrelia bacterium. Contact your doctor immediately and provide as much information as possible. The sooner treatment begins, the greater the chance of success!
In case of emergency, call 112 directly.
